. . . Throughout the world 25,000 children die each day from
water-related disease. . . |
We have been raising money to support
Voluntary Action for Development who are working to provide
safe water to rural communities in the Wakiso District of
Uganda, near Kampala. |
|
|
VAD is undertaking community
development programmes in the provision of safe water and
improved sanitation. In the past, most of the communities in
Wakiso District have had to draw unclean and unsafe water from
ponds where their animals also drink. |
 |
| Before : an
unprotected water source |
|
|
 |
| After : A clean water
point |
|
A network of VAD outreach
workers provides informal education on health and sanitation.
Water and sanitation committees are being trained in each
community to maintain the water sources and to promote good
hygiene and sanitation practices. As it is often children who
fetch the family's water, children's committees have also been
established for each water point, to keep the area clean. |
|
| Think about how much water you
use. What would it be like if you had to fetch your water every
day? Each time you turn a tap put a penny in a jar and remember
the people of Uganda. |
. . . How can you help?. . . |
